Years of fortifying Europe’s external borders have brought about many negative side effects such as high costs, more organised crime and considerable police corruption.  As an instrument of migration management, however, this has proved inefficient.  Why many European politicians still regard stricter border control as the single best strategy to curb irregular migration is a mystery.
