The Migration Debate: A Call for Differentiation

For more than three decades, the migration debate in Europe has been shaped primarily by right-wing parties. The left frequently responds not by offering an independent analysis, but simply by propagating the exact opposite of the right’s arguments. But that does not get us anywhere.

There are three central fallacies that distort the discussion:

  1. The right is against migration — so we must be in favour of it.
  2. Migration brings no problems with it — it enriches our society.
  3. The right demonises Islam — therefore we must endorse every aspect of this religion.

In my video statement for Club Volontaire, I explain why it is not enough to merely claim the opposite of wrong arguments. A wrong analysis remains wrong even when reversed. It is time to have a differentiated and factual discussion about migration and its impact on our society.
